Customer Reviews:Sound basic concept but follows the 'if the only tool you have is a hammer, all problems look like nails' approach
Definitely mixed opinions. On the one hand the fundamental principles behind it are reasonably sound and need to be heard and spread more widely. On the other hand there are countless issues with the way the book was written, and consequently with the way it can be (mis-)applied.
The authors applied plenty of psychological nudges to get the story under the skin (and consequently sell consulting services). As an exercise in spotting those, the book is actually good fun. The three principles of goal setting, praisings and reprimands are also fundamentally sound, however the one minute aspect is only applicable in certain, fairly routine situations. In effect, it reduces the requisite variety of the manager applying it; or in other words, if a hammer is the only tool you have, every problem starts looking like a nail.
What also irks is that the authors are in effect talking down to the readership to such an extent that one assumes the intended target audience is barely literate and not capable of really understanding the underlying concepts, unless they are packaged in a story. If one hour is all one has in one's life to devote to the study of management the book works, otherwise it is really ill equipping the intended manager for fulfilling their roles.
Finally, from my personal experience the one minute rules work reasonably well in a Western European / US setting but much less so with people from Eastern Europe or Asia.
Simple ideas are still the best
Although after working low down in the pecking-order in most of the varied places I have worked, the last few years I find myself managing people as opposed to being managed. Former manager quote:"You are the single most difficult person I have ever managed." Book quote:"Effective managers manage themselves and the people they work with (not 'over'), so that the organization and the people profit from their presence."
Great stuff. Recognised 2000 years ago by the greatest manager: 'Therefore, whatever you wish men to do to you, you must likewise do to them..'(Mt 7:12). Anyway, although not a fan of motivational style books, this revised edition follows a simple, easy format, can be read between (or even during) business meetings, and if the principles were applied, notice the difference. I can't vouch for what happens if you apply it by the letter, I'm too lazy!
Great concept
I read this over a couple of days in the few minutes I have to spare each day! It is a great concept and although I guess it is aimed at the commercial manager I have been able to put the ideas into practice in my job which involves educational management in the post graduate sector.
The wrong thing righter
On the one hand this is a really easy book to read, a short flight and you're done. And though it gives managers some easy stuff to do, in my opinion its the wrong stuff. It makes the assumption that front line staff have control over their performance, they often don't. Take for example a call centre where the workers are targeted to 100 calls per day. Many of the customers will get poor service so the worker can get their quota. All the coaching in the world will make no difference. What needs to change is the system created by the manager.
Pros: Fast read, and easy to understand.
Cons: Gets managers to spend time on the wrong thing, the people rather than the system.
The 1 minute manager
