Customer Reviews:Cornwell at his best
The tale of Alfred's England moves on a pace in this book. Alfred is now increasingly infirm, and at one stage in the book the rumour goes around that he is dead. Not quite yet, but our hero, Uhtred, follows his heart for a while and returns to the north. It takes Aethelflaed, Alfred's daughter, to tempt him south again. Personally, I now prefer this series to Sharpe, and this latest offering was in no way a disappointment. The worst thing about it was that it was almost impossible to put down.
Good read
Really enjoyable read, first book by Bernard Cornwell I had read and will now check out his other books.
The Bees Didn't Really Work
As a Bernard Cornwell fan I look forward to his latest novel arriving at Amazon. The latest series has been pretty good, although I feel it is being a little stretched out as we still await his battle to regain his lost inheritance.
This latest book was coming along quite well, but it was not a page-turner for me and I didn't have the desire to read it in a couple of goes.
The final battle, which involved throwing bee hives over the fortress wall was, to my mind, lucicrous and ruined the book.
I'm afraid I just couldn't take the novel seriously after that.

Absultely brilliant. Just as I expected. Couldn't put the book down till I had finished.
Only one problem - I now have to wait for the next episode.

Bernard Cornwell Books
I found this book to be equally as good as the first in the series and I havn't found another author who can write such a graphic battle scene. This I find is the same for his Sharpe and Rebel series. Most of them are based on actual battles with his own characters inserted into the story line.I have found all of his books an entertaining read.
