A genius idea, unfortunately not well written ![]()
I thought the book was over romanticised, the characterization was not very good, Clare was dull despite of all the efforts of the writer to make her sound interesting as an artist and the exploration of her work. Also, I thought they were both pictured as being too good, their flaws don't show through very well which makes it difficult to relate with the characters.
I think some parts of the book had no need to be there at all, they didn't add much to the story. The Christmas party at Clare parent's was too long and a bit meanless in my opinion.
That said, the idea of a person who has a genetic disease that makes him time travel involuntarily is great and original. I thought it was a genius idea, but not well explored. The vocabulary is sometimes ordinary and not appealing, if not repeating. The book is written in the first person, so I had the feeling that I was being "told" more than being "shown".
On the misery train... ![]()
The Time Traveler's WifeThe Time Traveler's Wife Audrey Niffenegger
I really enjoyed the first half of this book, in places the prose was good, funny and clever, the characters were strong and so believable that they immediately pulled you into the story. The choreography of Henry's journeys was done with such ease that you were able to sympathize and accept the joys and traumas of time travel, more or less as Henry; a man with a genetic defect that many would find enviable. So far, so good!
Then, a little over half way I began thinking "oh that as well..." There was just too much misery and heartache. Some would say life's like that and those would probably love it, but for me, such excess turned what could have been an excellent book into just a very sad one. I fear Niffenegger enjoys riding the misery train a little too much.
Someone suggested a tagline: "Don't read while shaving!" I rather like that, so very apt!

Buy it but whatever you do don't lend it out! ![]()
There are some books you would happily lend to your friends, siblings, neighbours but this should not be one of them...in the nicest possible way. I can not bear to think that this book would ever not be in my house for me to read over and over again. I talk from experience as I've now owned two copies of this book since 2004 - I had to buy the book a second time as after I read it the first time, it moved me so much I eagerly lent it to a friend, who then lent it to a friend, and so on, that I never got it back.
So my top tip for today is: buy this book, read it, fall in love with it as I have, tell others to buy it and then put it on your bookshelf and whatever you do don't lend it out without a written contract that says you'll get it back! You will want to read it again, believe me!
Lovely ![]()
Loved it. Fascinating and such a clever and well written idea. It took some work, getting used to who was when, but once that became established, I really enjoyed it.
I thought I would cry more at the end, but not too much....it was very sad and as some have stated, seemed like a bit of a rush to finish.
Not sure I wil...l read it again, it's so memorable, so can't imagine a time when I will have forgotten enough to want to read it.
