Amazing story, very average read ![]()
This is a frustrating book to read. The story and work of Greg Mortensen is quite remarkable and the book itself is well written. However, it somehow manages to be tedious and slow throughout - an amazing feat given Mortensen's incredible story and the relevance, history and colour of this part of the world.
I thought it repetitive and lacking in any any real deep insight on the region and its people. I also often found it glib and sentimental.
So all in all, the story of the man is amazing but the book as a whole is hugely disappointing.
Compulsory reading ![]()
This book describing the work of Greg Mortenson building schools in Pakistan & now Afghanistan over the last 2-3 decades should be compulsory reading for everyone and in particular all "western" leaders of the so-called first world. To read how one man can transcend the divisions of religion that appear to dominate our world & show that by being compassionate, sensible, caring and respectful of another culture many things can happen; and in a way that is far more likely to succeed in the settlement of peace than any war will ever do. Dr Greg should definitely get the Nobel Prize for Peace. Buy this book, you will not be disappointed & it might even change your life!
should be compulsory reading for politicians and students! ![]()
what a fantastic book, all the more so because it is a true story. politicans who aregue for the 'war on terror' or that in afgahnisatn to continue should read and LEARN. this should be read by anyone who wants to get a better understanding of just what is going on in that part of the world. A remarkable story, and a truly humbling demonstration of what one person with a mission can achieve.
Rubbish, rubbish, rubbish!! ![]()
What a boring and heavy book!! After reading some of the reviews, we decided in the Book club to give it a go.... What a waste of time and money!! Please do not waste yours!
There are far better books on the subject. This one is pretentious and bad written!!
