Great reference material... but not a study aid!
These books are with out doubt the definitive source of subject material for anyone beginning the lengthy ordeal of promotion in the modern UK police service, and as such cannot be easily ignored by potential candidates.
In my opinion that's where the problem lies. The publishers know that they have a virtual monopoly in this field and, in my opinion, little effort has gone into making these tomes readable, especially when you consider the "not insignificant" price tag.
I have no doubt over their accuracy and (given that the syllabus is conveniently changed every year) their inclusion of the latest updates, but who in all honesty will be able to sit down and read these from cover to cover whilst absorbing all the contents?
For my money these are a useful reference source, but certainly not an aid to study for promotion exams. There's a few alternatives available form other publishers which are far more readable and approachable if beginning a realisitc study programme... and for considerably less money in nearly every case!
In the ideal world you would have both... but then if you've got that sort of money to spend you've obviously already been promoted!!!
Essential reading for any Police Officer 
Having the most up to date set of Blackstones four volumes is essential for any Police Officer. All four are updated yearly, and cover the basics of Police work, particularly for those who are patrolling the streets, with as part of Safer Neighbourhood strategy or as a member of the response teams.
The books are compulsory for taking the Sgt's examinations, as the entire syllabus for the examination is included in the four volumes.
