Marian is the brightest star! ![]()
Yet again a great book from Marian Keyes, I really enjoyed it.
thank you Marian!!
disappointed ![]()
I bought this title on the strength of what Lorraine Kelly said about it in her interview with Marian Keyes. Unfortunatley, I am finding it hard going. Slow to get into. It just hasn't grabbed me yet. I'll persevere and hopefully I'll come back and give it a more positive review. I've read about a third so far.
Good but not brilliant ![]()
I've read 'This Charming Man' and 'The Other Side of the Story' and really enjoyed both of them though I have not found any of her other books to be as good as those two. I did enjoy this one but it isn't - in my opinion - her best. If you don't like the idea of having a fairy or ghost involved in the story - don't be put off because in the main it isn't intrusive.
The story concerns the occupants of 66 Star Street - Katie, nearly 40, and just about at the end of her tether with her boyfriend Connall; Jemima in her 80s who works part time on a fortune telling phone line and has her foster son Fionn staying with her while he makes a TV series about gardening; Jan, Andrei and Lydia - two Polish workers and a female taxi driver; and finally on the ground floor Maeve and Matt. All of these characters are about to have major changes in their lives and someone is masterminding them.
The writing flows easily and while I liked some of the characters - notably Lydia and Jemima - others seemed a bit too much like card board cut outs to me. There was just something which did not convince me enough to care about them. There were moments of humour and moments of tragedy but again I did not find all of them convincing. Yes it was an entertaining read and I'm sure Marian Keyes' many fans will love it but I think I will be giving her next one a miss.
Sneaks up on you and makes you smile ![]()
I'm a huge Marian Keyes fan and haven't been able to wait for the paperback of any of her book for years. When I picked this up I was a bit disappointed at first; it didn't seem to have the depth of her recent work. But I was judging too soon. As the book continued I found myself right back where I wanted to be: in the middle of a Marian Keyes book and loving it.
This is not the best of her recent work, hence "only" four stars, but it still knocks socks off just about anything else in the genre. As always Marian manages to be funny and moving in the space of a couple of sentences. You will find yourself caring about everyone who lives at 66 Star Street, hoping for the best, suspecting the very worst and hoping that somehow all involved can get past their woes and make a better future. A lovely read and highly recommended.
