Captures the spirit and imagination of the original trilogy of five ![]()
Like many fans of H2GT2G I was rather surprised to see a sixth installment make an appearance, and wary. Could this speaker for the dead successfully channel the wit and creativity of the late Douglas Adams?
The answer is a resounding yes, in that Colfer manages to continue the 'trilogy' where Adams left off in an amazingly consistent way. Now the fifth book was not up to the standard of the first, and this new offering is on a similar level with the fifth - but that remains a great achievement. I found myself re-living those wrapt days in the school library reading the original series almost as if no time had passed in between. I look forward to seeing if further offerings set in Adams universe make an appearance!
Very disappointing.... ![]()
What a shame. I'm afraid that this book isn't in the same league as anything that Douglas Adams has written. It seems as if the author has had explosions of ideas, names and events that are all over the place and desperately tries to weave them into a creative story. It simply doesn't work. Yes, there's the odd gem but they are submerged in a mess of disjointed "too clever by far" writing. Extremely disappointing.
It's ok ![]()
I wanted to love this book. I'm a huge fan of all things related to Hichiker's Guide to the Galaxy and Douglas Adams....but.....I couldn't love this.
Whilst I know there can only be one Douglas it is possible to carry on with the characters that we have known and loved, this book didn't seem to know what it was or where it wanted to go.
Shame really
Part 6 of 3 worth 6 of 5 stars ![]()
Eoin Colfer did, I think, an amazing job with this book. He did not try to be Adams, but he wrote the characters wonderfully and the plot feels as though Adams wrote it. The biggest stylistic differences I've noticed were 1-Colfer's Guide notes seem to be less encyclopedia-esque and a little more gossipy, a little longer and a little more frequent. and 2-longer chapters vs. Adams's short chapters. Neither of which makes much of a difference in the story, but the longer chapters does make it longer for me to read the book as I tend to read when on my daily bus commute, but don't like stopping mid chapter.
I'm not writing anything more specific about what I like about the book because if you've read the first 5 you should know already and I don't want to be a spoiler.
ENJOY!
