Customer Reviews:
Only works if you do. But brilliant if you do!
I've worked in the freelance photo /illustration / writing business for most of my career (about 30 years to date) and the one thing I find that many 'aspiring' newcomers lack is the ability to understand that you need to do more than just buy a book!
There are plenty of great guides for freelancers out there, and this is one of the best for photographers. I have been buying it for as long as I can remember, and it is the only guide I now routinely buy each year.
It is full of information that will help you direct your work towards a suitable market.
However - remember you have to do some work yourself.
Firstly, by actually taking some photographs (and you would be amazed at how many people I meet who tell me they want to be freelance photographers, but actually have little or no work to show).
Secondly, you need to be careful in sending your work to appropriate markets (in other words read the requirements)and making sure you give your potential customers what they actually ask for, and not just what you happen to have on file at the moment!
So, buy the book, because it is a good and useful volume, but make sure that you have a game plan which goes beyond just reading a book and then becoming rich and/or famous.
It the tough stuff in the middle of these two that so may people seem to miss!

great book
I had a previous book from 2005 which was very helpfull and kept me going for many years. This book is even better in that it informs the photographer what the publishing houses are looking for.

Great idea for would-be freelance photographers
This handbook is a mine of information for those wishing to find ways to submit photographs for publication. It lists countless magazines, newspapers, calendar firms etc and offers down-to-earth and detailed advice. With digital imaging and enhancement a reality for every keen cameraman/woman now, it is great to know how one can take this a step further and turn a hobby into a potential money-spinner.

It's ok, but literally like a phone book.
As the title says, it's full of useful contact details, but presented literally like a phone directory. You may be better off finding the contact details online of magazines/publishers you know, since you'll have a much better chance of selling them a photo if you're familiar with them, and therefore have an idea of the sort of things they would look for & criteria they might judge by.

It would have been vastly improved if there was even a single thumbnail size image next to each entry, either of the cover of the magazine, or a sample/example of the sort of photo they're interested in.

Otherwise very comprehensive listing.

Excellent Freelance reference book
I bought this 2009 edition book a few weeks ago after reading reviews.

Although I have only been using my Canon 400d slr for 6 months, I wanted to know how poor or good my pics were. I was interested in the freelance market. I have read through this book and it hasn't disappointed!

It tells you how to step into the freelance market place.
What specific companies are requiring and are in listed sections.
From art to wildlife required by the freelancer for magazines, newspapers etc; Email addys, pic and text requirements are included.

At the back of this informative book is a section on specialist companies involved in photographic equipment to providing insurance for the photographer. There is also a list of Agencies to promote your work/portfolio.

The book is essential for the person who wants to sell their pics to specific markets, and the amount of commission that could be earned.

This book is an excellent reference book and I am about to test the water with several of my pics to specialist companies. I may have many knock backs but it will be fun finding out.
