Excellent conceptual read. ![]()
I had previous read the 49 laws of power by Robert Greene and was impressed with his work & referencing throughout history. Not only did he present a concept (in the manner of a law) but he explained it and reinforced his explanation with occurrences in history where the law could be seen to have taken effect.
With this book he accomplishes this even more effectively: with the exemplification of 50 cent and areas of his life. The social mobility possessed and exhibited by Curtis Jackson throughout his life is inspirational, through the medium of his music he managed to change and actively mold his life: this is communicated throughout the book.
The underlying theme of the book being 'nihil timendum est' or 'fear nothing' and is a old concept however communicated in a refreshing and innovative way by Greene throughout the book. Other core concepts expressed through the book include: responsibility for ones self and a development of individuality ... key areas that allow opportunities to be fully extracted.
An EXCELLENT and concise read, can be re-read easily. Buy you're copy today, make notes and scribble all over it and use it to accomplish your own personal goals.
The 50th Law ![]()
I'm already a fan of Robert Greene's The 48 Laws of Power, and I wasn't disappointed by his latest offering. I thought the content was inspirational and has given me yet another perspective to view the world, myself and others.
I felt the role of 50 cent was more as a marketing tool than as a co-author, however, it did give the book an edge it obviously wouldn't of had if 50 cent wasn't featured and used as a 21st century example.
Overall, in my opinion, a very good book that can be read over and over again !!

Poker players call it "Tilt" - when your perceptions become skewed by fear, overwhelm or frustration. In this state you lose co-ordination and timing. Your moves become rigid, uncreative and forced. You are off balance and this manifests in overly timid or aggressive play. Through the lens of fear you cannot read the moves of the other players properly. Bad luck is taken as a personal affront. Invariably you lose money fast.
The premise of this book is that most of us live in a state of Tilt. Our lives are coloured by a generalized anxiety and stress that severely limits our power. We can either distract ourselves from this anxiety with a drug of choice: be it TV, heroin or ice cream; or we can defeat our fears and embrace the pleasure of realism and a serene, fearless mind. This book, using illustrations from 50 Cent's life and historical figures, demonstrates how to overcome fear and how this 'overcoming' manifests as power. 50 Cent and Greene identify ten main areas that fear must be systematically defeated. The goal is a kind of Zen like presence.
Greene and 50 Cent bring a particularly amoral, self serving and ruthless perspective to the process. It's all about looking out for Number 1, fighting fear, conquering, bludgeoning it into submission. That's fine, though some would say it's explicitly "evil" by normal standards. The assertion that all the world is entirely self serving and manipulative is something Greene and 50 consistently emphasise. Of course, this is a book about power so it's understandable that they interpret events as power plays. However, they de-emphasise the influence of human connections and love in peoples' behaviour.
The most interesting thing about the book is the radical new model of power. Traditionally, power is about material assets. However, 50 Cent and Greene present power as a mindset. For an image, think of a martial artist using the weight of the opponent to advantage. This is in contrast to people in positions of authority and riches who are dependent on those assets. Of course, material riches tend to accrue to those who master Greene's fluid power.
Control your mind-set to the events around you ![]()
I thoroughly recommend this book.
As a self help book - it's an enjoyable read. The books central theme is about a particular philosophy of life i.e the conquest of fear.
The author Robert Greene, imparts some uncomfortable truths to a self deluding world.
Curtis Jackson (aka 50 cent) is referred throughout the book in the third person. His story from child orphan, to drug dealer, to famous rapper adds real life to the books theme of overcoming adversity and conquering fear.
Greene himself shows an in-depth knowledge of human nature.
For a deeper understanding of the human mind and to improve your own life - read this book.
