Customer Reviews:
Affirmation
A colleague recently leant me the Secret on 4 CDs Unabridged and I've been listening to it this weekend.

I understand why some people dismiss this and have written reviews giving only one star but parts of the secret I have actually experienced first hand. Here are some examples of my own experiences of the Secret actually working.

Example One

In 1990 I was sitting finals exams that summer and I wanted something light to read so I started collecting DC and Marvel Comics again. I managed to buy a set that had been originally written in the 1970's. I read through all of the books from issue 1 through to issue 23 and when I reached the end of issue 23, on the last page the book advertised an issue 24. I thought this was strange because I'd not seen an issue 24 of this comic book run. So I did some more checking and discovered that it had never been published. This occupied my mind during the week. I went to the local comic story every Thursday when the new issues came in and was waiting for the post to arrive and chatting to the owner, Andy. Now remember that this comic run had ended over ten years earlier. When we opened the box there was a compilation book inside that had just been printed and in the book was the never before printed, issue 24 of that same series.

Example Two

In 2000 I'd met a girl in Los Angeles while on Holiday. She was going through a tough time for personal reasons and from time to time she would need some money for food, so I would sent her some cash via Western Union. She never asked for much but my friends said she was just using me etc etc. Anyway I really cared about her and in total that summer I probably sent her £500, so it wasn't a fortune. Still my friends told me that she was a bad person and was just using me. Anyway I wanted to help her and gave this money freely without asking for anything in return. One day I received a phone call from my old mortage advisor and he told me about the miss selling of Endowment Mortgages, to cut a long story short I ended up receiving over £4000 back from the Mortgage company. The girl and I are still best friends to this day.

Example Three.

Since my friend told me about the Secret, I thought I'd practice a little. This was before I'd listened to the CD's. I had recently been looking for an old film that was no longer available and very very rare, and had placed some messages on a forum with no success. After employing the secret, within days somebody sent me a poor quality edited version but I knew that the original was much longer. I started believing that somebody would contact me with the full version and within a week, I had received an email from somebody that had the original film on VHS and was willing to sell me it. The film was made in 1992 and even the original producers didn't have a copy, I thought it had been lost forever.

I have for years read books on Quantum Physics, Religion, Biology, History.

I had already sensed that there was a Secret as these authors had described but I believed that it operated very much on a sub-conscious level.

The Secret teaches you methods to make these things happen through positive thought.

Over the past two years I've been having a few problems and after listening to the Secret I'm really wondering whether I have been approaching the issues in completely the wrong way. Although I will find it very hard, I suspect I need to change my approach and learn to move on.

The secret has confirmed many thoughts and suspicions that I've had for years and I believe that it is no coincidence that it has come to me at a time of need.

The reason that I gave the Secret four stars and not five is because I do not agree with the section on victims, that is the one part of the Secret that many people will find offensive.

Otherwise I advise anyone to buy the Secret and try to keep an open mind.

A starting point
The Secret does have much to offer, but one should keep in mind that deals primarily with the behavioural side of creating our realities. The idea of the law of attraction at the foundation of your reality is found as the secret states, though out the centuries in various wisdoms. There is of course something to be learned. But it is not the answer to finding balance in the spirit, tranquillity in the heart or loving oneself. Finding enlightenment, exploring growth and peace within is a path that requires you to keep moving beyond simply creating the your reality. So I am not casting "The secret" aside, I am simply saying it is a step and one that makes you stop and take some responsibility for your day to day life. But so much of the book and video gets embraced in the west as many simply look at it as a way to get all the things they want, the job, the money, the house.... you get the point. These things may simplify aspects of our lives or complicate further.

If you want to find peace and grow, then still read the book with a focus on taking responsibility for your life going forward. But it will not take you into the spiritual aspects of the being. It will not help you heal and learn to embrace life and the human condition. But then again, whether it is "The Secret" or any other book, if you simply reads word for word and just follow blindly you will only get so far. This the main issue I have with this books phenomena it followed as dogma by so many, which is not living responsibly or taking control of one's life.

Thought Provoking
This book is an easy read and set out in such a way that it makes you pause to think.
It is a very thought provoking read and one which I believe people will be able to relate to.I recommend it and see what happens!

Life Changing
This book can literally change your life overnight. Easy to read with simple and well thought out examples of how our thoughts affect our environment. Fully recommended. Whether you believe in the content or not there is nothing to lose and everything to gain by incorporating the practices into your daily life.

Holding back the things that matter
This book is pleasant to read, as many have attested.

However, I think it is yet one of those books that pour gold-dust around our eyes, making us feel the centre of the world, and like children, that we can have everything we wish for. This book is clearly written for the middle-class citizen of the western world. I doubt a starving African child who has read this book would become a millionaire overnight because he just really really wanted to.

"The Secret" is nothing more than what we thought was true when we were children: that we can have everything we wanted. Unfortunately, due to the gravitational force of the Earth, unless I use an airplane or wings, I am unable to fly/levitate. No matter how much I wish for it. And what if, I asked from the universe, that all I want is that people's wishes cannot be fulfilled by the universe itself. What would happen then? And assuming all the people who have found out the secret are very kind and nice people, why is there still war? Why is there still hunger, poverty, diseases? Why is there corruption, deceit, crime, fires, ecological destructions, pollution of the environment? Do they only think about themselves, about finding a feather on their way to work, about getting that new car? Or does the secret only apply to such things?

It seems this book is a very well-refined example of pseudoscience, but in a much subtler sense because it does not try to distribute itself like one.

To quote Carl Sagan from his brilliant book "The Demon-haunted World":

"[..] superstition and pseudoscience keep getting in the way [of us recognising science's beauty and power], distracting [..] us, providing easy answers, dodging skeptical scrutiny, casually pressing our awe buttons and cheapening the experience, making us routine and comfortable pacticioners as well as victims of credulity."

And a bit further down:

"Pseudoscience is easier to contrive than science, because distracting confrontations with reality -where we cannot control the outcome of the comparison- are more readily avoided. [...] Pseudoscience speaks to powerful emotional needs that science often leaves unfulfilled. It caters the fantasies about personal powers we lack and long for, [...] it offers satisfaction of spiritual needs, cures of diseases, [...] reassures us of our cosmic centrality and importance." (Sagan, Carl. "The Demon-Haunted World", Headline Book Publishing, 1997. pp.17-18)

Sounds familiar?

Unfortunately, it's one of those things that keep people away from the really, really interesting things about our world, such as quantum physics and eastern philosophies.

If you want a life-changing book, read Fritjof Capra's "The Tao of Physics (Flamingo)", or his "The Web of Life: A New Synthesis of Mind and Matter". And read a book on skepticism ("Why people believe weird things" by Michael Shermer is very enjoyable) - it'll only be good for you.
