Customer Reviews:Too confusing for the general reader
Vince Cable (nearly typed Clark there) was one of the few politicians to have his reputation enhanced by the credit crunch and he seems to be a decent, knowledge-able man. Probably the best chancellor we'll never have in fact.
However this book seems to have been rushed, the meat of the book is in the middle chapters and they are very confusing. The rest of the book is pretty conventional stuff, so I didn't feel I learned very much and he doesn't really have much in the way of new solutions to the problem.
Broadly he just confirms what we already know - the credit crunch was caused by banks taking large bets with money they didn't have. Once the bets stopped paying off, the money wasn't there to pay off the creditors. You can wrap it all up in CDOs etc. but it's fairly simple at heart.
So not the classic I hoped for, there are better economics writers out there for the general reader. Tim Harford and Michael Lewis spring to mind, although no-one seems to have produced the definitive guide to the credit crunch yet (except possibly Keynes a long time ago).
Very clear and concise
I have only just started the book but already it has proven to hold my attention .... a good read, recommend to any armchair economist.
Global Economics makes more sense now
I am not an economist by education or training, so I read this book in order to learn more. I would certainly recommend it to others who want to know about the world economic system, how it works, and why it matters. Many people appear to believe that events at global level really don't affect them - but they do. This book should be on the curriculum at schools and universities. It is written by a man who knows about business and economics, not just about politics.
Full of Insights
This is an impressive book but I give three stars because it's difficult. Students should certainly read it but for the more general reader this is rather hard going. It took me ages to get through it and I persisted only because the topic is so important. Vince Cable has impressive depth and breadth of knowledge. "The Storm" certainly gives the wider picture. The Liberals have some formidable talent in their ranks.
Admirable but ultimately unsuccessful
Vince Cable has a very approachable writing style, which makes him an amiable companion along the treacherous path through the morass of modern finance.
However, this book's absolutely necessary engagement with the minutiae of its subject makes it difficult for the general reader (who I believe is the target audience for this book) to digest.
As others have suggested, it is a little technical and like any other book commenting on current events has very soon been overtaken by what has happened since. That said, it remains an admirable, albeit flawed, attempt to bring a complex truth to a non-specialist audience.
