A True British Hero ![]()
Jungle Soldier, a wonderful read about a truly gifted man, for those of us of a certain age a "Boys Own" story. I must confess this man was my Headmaster at King Alfred School, Plön, Germany, in 1952, to this day his former Pupil's speak in glowing terms about him, another book could have been written about how he created a wonderful school.Jungle Soldier: The True Story of Freddy Spencer Chapman
A long overdue account ![]()
Having discovered and re-read many times 'The Jungle is Neutral',I was delighted to find that a capable author had identified F.Spencer Chapman as a story worth telling. If you're expecting a gung-ho 'shoot 'em all' tale you'll be disappointed but if you want an account of an 'old school' hero then this is a superb book.
A life lived to the full ![]()
This is an important and fascinating book, written and researched by a consummate wordsmith, about a remarkable man and soldier. I was priveleged to have met and listened to Freddy Spencer Chapman, when he was lecturing at Gordonstoun in 1949. Even at my then tender years, I still vividly remember his near mesmeric qualities. He led me on my own journey through Malaya at the end of the Emergency in 1958. Jungle Soldier: The True Story of Freddy Spencer Chapman Ignore the dreadful SAS type pot boiler cover and enjoy this book.
An ordeal almost beyond belief ![]()
This is a wonderful, compelling account of a truly remarkable man. Freddy Spencer Chapman defied the Japanese in the jungle for three and a half years after they swept through Malaya in January 1942. His companions were killed, taken prisoner or beheaded, but he never surrendered. Jungle Soldier uses Chapman's diaries, and the account he wrote just after the war, to show us his terrifying ordeal. By recounting his life from earliest childhood, it also shows us why he survived. We see him as a schoolboy, armouring himself as an orphan with toughness and love of the wild, and as a young explorer, learning endurance and the arts of survival in Greenland and Tibet ... We get a vivid picture of the half-forgotten man his contemporaries called `the jungle Lawrence.'
