Basic introduction .. for inexperienced merchandisers/ beginners/ students ![]()
The book is well written and nicely laid out..it covers all the basics of merchandising in sometimes painful detail. It would be useful if you are under 16 or never worked in retail or if you are not aware that shops display stuff to tempt you into buying!!
However I would expect that if you search out a book on merchandising you already have some interest or experience in that area and this written for those without any base knowledge.
I like the glossy pictures and I actually read all the text. Sometimes the photos don't actually quite relate to the text but as it's not terribly expensive I forgive.
It's a nice book of photos of in-store layouts but I think it focuses more on that really than window dressing.
Essential if you're opening, managing or designing a store ![]()
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/review/R25CVD3ZAHCKZL This book is essential not just to retail store designers but also to business people in retail.
The book takes an in depth look at all subjects relating to merchandising. It takes care to help readers understand every aspect of it.
There are 6 main chapters namely, The Role fo the Visual Merchandiser, Store Design, Windows, In-store Visual Merchandising, Mannequins, The Visual Merchandiser's Studio. The titles of the chapters are pretty self explanatory.
They get down into the details of concept and provides tons of examples and case studies from the real world. Some of the big store names featured includes Lane Crawford, Atelier 1 and Giorgio Armani.
There are lessons on how stores can be designed, right down to the placing of lights and placement of shelves. Readers can also learn how to create ambience, carry out sales promotions, improve the usage of signages and fixtures and many other useful techniques.
I've to say it again. This book is essential if you're opening or managing a retail store or helping to design one.

THE VM book for Students ![]()
I have found this book to be of great benefit in my studies. It helped to further my understanding of the subject, both increasing my knowledge of current and emerging trends and inspiring many ideas of my own. It also gives those much needed facts that go beyond the basics of window display including budget planning and even health and safety.
A real nugget of a book that successfully attempts to look at the full breadth of a truly engaging subject.
Some useful tips... ![]()
This book has some useful tips, but I found the photographs used unappealing and over the top. (Some of the window displays shown would look better on a pantomime set.) It might work for trendy fashion boutiques, but I would not recommend this book to any retailer who actually wants to show the public what they stock in a practical way.
