Customer Reviews:Maybe the most over-rated book of the century?
So I picked up this book a couple of years ago. I wasn't very into reading and I was completely bored, plus I was going into a phase where I was obsessed with vampires and romances. It seemed the perfect book to read. I picked it up, opened it to the first page, and began to read. I didn't actually fall asleep reading it, but I had the sudden urge to crawl back into bed.
A year later, the movie comes out. I saw the movie. Waste of my time and money. Well, anyway, I decided, why not try reading the book again? I'm much more into reading and I actually read through atleast the first 40 or 50 pages before I make a judgement. 40 or 50 pages of word vomit and sexual stereotypes later, I found myself on the verge of striking a match and setting this book on fire.
The one word I could use to describe this is 'over-rated'. Sure enough, maybe it's a mediocre book. But the hype about it is too over the top. I have to suffer hearing about Twilight everyday from over-obsessed teenage fan girls who have wet dreams about Edward and Jacob.
This book just proves what has happened to literature. It's died.
If you want a good book about vampires and teeny love, try looking for this cute, little, less-than-300-page book my friend once found in a library called Vampire Heart. It not predictable, doesn't promote sexism, the heroine has a personality and doesn't kill herself for the guy she loves. Come on, people! We've been working for centuries to break free from sexism, and then you just go and worship a book like Twilight which is based around the fact that she is completely hopeless without a guy in her life?
When you're ready for some real reading material, pick up a Chuck Palahniuk book. I feel unworthy comparing his books to this trash.
A vampire novel with no teeth
OK at nearly 50 and male I'm hardly the target demographic, but my daughter loves this and insisted I read it, and I wanted to like it.
It starts OK with Bella returning to Forks, going to school getting to know the locals, and being intrigued by the mysterious Cullens.
But once Edwards 'secret' is revealed the story just grinds to a halt with nothing but tedious conversations between Bella and Edward, and her going on about how handsome and pale he is. There is no dramatic tension - unless you count the heavy handed sexual abstinence metaphor.
It picks up a little towards the end when Bella finally gets to meet the rest of the Cullens, and the arrival of some bad vamps brings a hint of threat. But ends with more of Bella and Edward gushing at each other.
It's poorly written with clunky dialogue and at least 100 pages too long. While the sexual politics of the relationship are deeply regressive. Powerful man, who mustn't get too 'aroused', vulnerable girl who isn't allowed to express her desires.
Shame the basic set up could be interesting, but the best ideas are borrowed (most obviously from Buffy), while the authors original contributions are to throw out much of vampire lore (crosses, daylight etc.) to little effect. Perhaps the later books are better but I won't be bothering to find out.
A surprising little gem.
A few other reviewers have mentioned that they approached the book in the same manner that I did. I'm 20 years old and I thought that this book may be a little too 'young' for me. However I was pleasantly surprised. It is indeed a book written for a teenage audience and the writing style reflects that, however anyone that has been through those teenage years will be able to relate to the characters and the story line. It made me feel that I was that age again, all of the feelings that Bella is experiencing are really expressed through the narrative. It had me gripped, for the entire book. And it sparked a chord with me emotionally and therefore it was irrelevant that it wasn't as complex as the books I would normally go for.
I don't normally write reviews but this book really deserved one. I thought it was excellent, and I enjoyed every word of it.
Outstanding.
Quite frankly this book was the best book I have ever read in my life, and have now become addicted on reading it over and over again.
