A great place to start
Shares made simple is a well written, easy to read and very informative book, for beginers on the stock market.
The concepts involed are very easy to pick up and reading the book becomes a breeze once you get hocked on it. This is most definity the place to start if your interested and don't know where to start. It covers all the most common jargon used in stocks, and leads well into other book that require a certain level of knowledge.
Excellent book for the beginner
This book has provided me with the basics about what the Stock Market is, how it works, risks and rewards, techniques for making money and much more. I would highly recommend this book to someone who is new to trading and wants to build up a small portfolio. I'm not the quickest reader in the world (normally put a book down after about 30 minutes and never pick it up again!!), however this one got me hooked and I've read it from cover to cover in record time!. I'm trying to think of something negative points to put, but there aren't any.
Shares Made Simple - a good introduction. 
A good introduction to what the stock market and shares is all about, dealing with the fundamentals of the subject in easy to understand language and using real examples to make a point.
Brilliant if you know nothing about shares and the stock market
A well written, informative book that avoids using jargon and allows anybody to get a good base knowledge of shares and the market. I found this book considerably better than others which seem to promote their websites or magazines or in one case just their investing prowess!
Really good
Very useful for the newer shareholder. Nothing on shorting / spread betting, but very useful for someone who wants a basic and overall knowledge on the subject.
