Customer Reviews:Still riding the gravy train
I could not afford this box set when it first appeared in December 2007, and judging by some of the harsh reviews from that period, it appears I had a lucky escape!
Now nearly two years later, after reading many more positive appraisals, I have decided to take the plunge.
And what a thing of great joy this beast is, having been given a complete overhaul.
So what have EMI done to redeem themselves after the near disaster of the original release?
Firstly the alleged dodgy printing on certain sleeves has been corrected, as have the labels for "Ummagumma", i.e. disc one now has label one and disc two label two.
All gatefold sleeves are properly aligned, and the outer black plastic sleeve for "Wish You Were Here" has been changed. No longer does one have to ruin it by slicing it open down the side. Simply lift the resealable flap, and withdraw the album that way!
Finally, the inner sleeve of "The Wall" disc two has been corrected, so both sets of lyrics are present and correct.
Unfortunately all albums from "Piper" to "Moon" still come with these horrible thin plastic sleeves. CD paper sleeves are available, and it's a mystery as to why EMI did not use these.
The set also includes two items that are best described as either being oversized drinks coasters or undersized mouse mats! These feature the photos from the outer slipcase.
Also included is a giant full colour paper poster featuring all the albums, plus other artwork associated with Pink Floyd.
No sign of the `linen' poster, and can anyone confirm whether or not there was a documentary DVD with the original and/or any other large stickers or is my memory playing tricks?
Although the overall construction of the replica sleeves is still some way off the perfection displayed by those in the recent Beatles mono albums box set, I would have no hesitation in recommending this collection to any Floyd head, particularly given the fact that plans to issue the albums in their replica sleeves separately have now reportedly been shelved.
A balanced review
Yes at the original price there wasn't much incentive to buy this. At what I paid for it I thought it was good value.
The material is all very familiar and everyone has their own idea of which are the best albums. I'm not even going to talk about the music apart from to say that all of the remasters are very good.
Apart from being able to buy an instant PF collection what you are getting is the collectible packaging. So what exactly is the quality like. Well its actually very good. the card mini LP sleeves are thicker than some I have come across (apart from OBC which is more like paper). Most of them are over laminated with the artwork, and most apart from Meddle are nice and glossy. The gatefold versions have 2 creases to form a proper spine. These seem to have been hurriedly closed in assembly so that one side has closed more than the other, causing the aforementioned misalignment. It's easily put right by applying a bit of pressure to the creases so that they all close properly.
In my set the single sleeves have not been cut too smoothly but all I had to do was run them across the smooth side of one of my wifes nail boards and they were sorted. it's good quality card and white all of the way through almost and the dust is like plasterboard.
OK so there is no book or extra liner notes so you are left with microscopic sleeve print to read. It goes with the territory of mini LP sleeves.
What I do find unforgivable is the way only the albums that originally came with printed inner sleeves have received inner sleeves now, although the ones you get are all printed with artwork. This means that the others are just stuffed into the poly bags and are constantly trying to roll out.
Other than that this is a great set and definitely my last before a high def version comes along.
I sold my Shine On set when I thought we were all set to get SACD's of all the albums. Apart from the lack of the book this is a much nicer way to enjoy the albums.
STILL FIRST IN SPACE
Ignore the negative reviews for this item. I had allowed myself to be dissuaded from buying this wonderful boxed set after reading all those whingeing complaints about poor packaging, no new remastering, EMI's rip-off of the fans and so on. However, when I was able to secure a copy for around £75 (I admit that the RRP is rather steep), I realised just how misled I'd been. As a dedicated Floyd fan since the beginning of time, this is just about the most treasured item I can think of. The albums certainly ARE remastered, at least when compared to my original CD versions from the mid-80s, and it is the kind of remastering that really helps, not the overdone "everything switched to 11 on the monitor" type of remastering that you so often get these days. (Yes, Led Zeppelin and Genesis boxed sets, I mean you.)
As for the packaging, well, these replicas sleeves are an utter joy to behold. I can find none of the misaligned printing, or faulty lyrics on inner sleeves, or any of the other details that others have quibbled over. And the accompanying poster is a sheer delight. What better overview could there be of the Floyd's relationship with Hipgnosis than this?
Ignore the nay-sayers. If you can track down a discounted set, whether you already have these albums or not, I would urge you to take the Pink Floyd plunge. You won't regret it.
Oh by the way it is a classic!
This boxed set is a marvellous collection of Pink Floyd's studio recordings. The packaging sticks truthfully to the original vinyl albums, with polythene 'inners' replacing scratchy paper. Everything is there, including the polythene wrapper around the 'Wish you were here' album plus the posters. Pink Floyd 'were' very conscious of their image and their album covers were always innovative. 'Oh by the way' allows all of the over fifties to renew their collection in more ways that just the music. My original vinyl albums suffered at the hands of a flash flood and it was great to be able to buy something 'smaller but beautifully created'. There will be many critics of the Floyd for selling out ... but this ancient space rocker is very, very happy indeed. For people new to the Floyd, this is a great way of getting an instant collection of their recordings. It may not be the 'cool' way to do it, but young people don't like to hang around ... and why should they. Buy it!!
Dedicated Collector
I will probably buy this because of the presentation and to ensure that my Pink Floyd collection remains complete in every permutation of packaging and mixing. Discussion of every track here is unnecessary, the band can safely rest on its laurels as the most innovative, talented and successful act ever of its genre.
On the debit side there are questions as always - when is some new material going to be released and when are they going to perform live again ?
