Belkin USB Hub
Excellent, stable and robust. I have used several usb hubs which had many problems (I/O errors mainly) but not this one. Used on Linux/Windows.
Reliable, but poor design. 
I've always trusted Belkin products. They are generally always reliable (I've only every had one USB Hub fail on me) and this unit is no exception. The only real issue I have with it is the poor design. Great, you can split it up and use the 4 port bit elsewhere, as the pack shot shows, but when would you do that? To my mind, you would either use the unit split in two permanently or fixed together permenantly. If you decide to use it split up, then you can get neater 4 port units as this one seems a little flimsy. Fixed together; now this is where the poor design shows. Imagine what it looks like when, like me, you have all seven ports used up - pretty untidy I can tell you - and it doesn't want to sit flat either because the base it made of such light plastic. Then you come to removing one of the cables from the 4 port bit. You have to hold it down like an angry ferret to make sure you don't accidentally unplug the whole unit, which is not always happy to be touched. The idea is good, Belkin, but it needs to be built better. For those who want a more permenant USB setup, get a standard 7 port unit; this one falls short.
just not my luck
I bought this item after reading the reviews on amazon and on other forums. Bought it, plugged it in, worked like a charm - at first. It 5 out of seven available usb ports were not detecting my usb devices. I've got a speaker and several hard drives that i prefer to be connected to my pc at all times. Unfortunately, i'm going to have to go through the whole 'transfer to desktop and then to the other drives' until i get something else to replace this one.
I tried looking for a driver on Belkin's website to see if its the drive that may need updating but they dont have any. I did give this item 3 stars though simply coz it looks amazing next on my desk and the fact that its got the rotating extension that can fit almost anywhere.
Belkin 2-N-1 USB 2.0 7-Port hub.
I had a 3 port Belkin USB hub a few years ago and it refused to work with some devices. So I thought long and hard before buying their 7 port offering. But with a printer, scanner, camera cable, mouse and external HD all competing for 4 USB ports on my new computer it was either a multi-hub or regular plug swapping. Although plug swapping should be ok as an engineer plugs wear and wear means trouble after awhile. So I went for the Belkin multi-hub. It arrived within the time specified and once plugged in has worked faultlessly since with all my devices in place. I find the removable top 4 ports a strange design since if you remove this piece and plug it into a USB port on your computer you loose the hubs power supply feed, which is probably why my first Belkin was unreliable, since on some devices there probably wasn't enough juice to send the data through the hub. But other than that the Belkin works fine.
Not so well-thought out design
This hub generally works as it should, but has two faults as far as I'm concerned.
If you use the sockets in the top, they are not as stable as they should be. I had a USB turntable plugged in, and found strange noise overlaid on my recording. I tracked it down to the USB lead not being completely steady in the socket. When I transferred it to my computer, the noise disappeared.
If you buy it to use the detachable top with a laptop, be warned that (at least on my Macbook) it makes nearly all other sockets inaccessible since it covers them; most seriously perhaps the ethernet port. Unless you are fortunate enough to have a USB socket placed away from all other sockets you may not find it very useable. It may work with a lead, of course - I haven't tried that.
