tom tom all the way
tried garmin as the product looks better and the write ups were good. Traffic system was terrible, liked to tell me i was in a jam when there but not before!
Clunky update system and process, have gone back to tom tom and would reccomend the new one with traffic and lane guidance.
Good for me as a newbie to sat nav 
I don't want to repeat other reviewers' comments, just add a few observations. I've had this a few months now. I had never bought or even used a sat nav before buying this and was overwhelmed in deciding what to buy by the options and features I was reading about. Having it now is great. This unit does everything I need and is intuitive to use (I still have read the instructions).
- I'm sure occasionally the route might not be optimal if you are comparing with your own knowledge of an area you know well (e.g. by a few mins). However the time it saves getting lost (hours?!) and stressing in an area you don't know, is invaluable and what it's designed for. For a long journey where I want to say stay on the motorway longer, take a different A-road or avoid a town, it's easy to zoom out on map view and drag the route across, and it re-calculates the route with this via point.
- The speed (aka 'safety') camera warnings are really useful on regular roads, especially in towns when you might not otherwise spot them. I've found them to be up-to-date in location and speed limit here. It blings once to tell you and only keeps annoyingly blinging if you're speeding. So if you like speeding you could switch this off. On motorways the feature can be annoying as it warns of all mobile cameras which could potentially be the entire length of motorway, and also it sometimes appears to have outdated speed limit info e.g. warning of a 50 mph long after the road works etc have finished.
- Being able to find your nearest X (e.g. Italian restaurant, petrol station) has often been surprisingly handy, as well as bookmarking favourite destinations.
- The traffic report/jam feature doesn't seem worth it to me. It doesn't always pick up jams - presumably because they form too quickly, other times I have expected a bad jam but nothing much materialises, perhaps because it is now dispersing and again the report is a little old. I find that setting my car radio to tune into all local traffic reports is much more effective, and then the information you get is more informative than simply an orange/red coloured wanring symbol. This is why it loses a star (you pay more for a unit with this feature).
Very good purchase
I bought this about a month ago and it is very simple to use straight out of the box.
The mapping is clear and easy to view, even on the smaller screen and it very quickly finds the satellites to get you started.
It also quickly recalculates your route if you choose another course or as I did made a wrong turn heading into Liverpool!
There are a couple of areas I've found where the maps aren't fully up to date like going from the A404 onto the M40 and where the M6 toll joins the M6 north of Birmingham so this is the only reason it doesn't get 5 stars.
Overall very happy with the purchase.
Very user friendly and very quick calculation
GPS navigation is brilliant, easy to use, and very quick for route calculation and finding the satellite signals. In order to receive traffic information, you need to plug the antenna cable (comes with it) into the in-car charger cable (embedded is the traffic receiver), then the traffic functionality will be automatically enabled.
Neat, very effective and good value SatNav unit
If you are looking for an effective, reliable and simple to use European mapped SatNav unit then look no further. I bought the unit with the TMC function but from other reviews was not expecting this function to be very effective. On two occasions the system has warned and once navigated around the problem. Would recommend this unit to anyone looking for a neat, compact, simple to use and effective satellite navigation system.
