Customer Reviews:
A wonderful overview but some recording details would have been useful
This is a four disc overview of John Martyn's lengthy career, and is now a full stop since Martyn's passing in January 2009. The 34 tracks on the first two discs include a song from each of the 22 albums released in his lifetime, and 12 previously unreleased studio tracks. In other words there is much for the Martyn fan who thought they already had everything.

Discs 3 and 4 consist of beautifully recorded unreleased live material, the earliest from 1973 with Danny Thompson, stopping off at the legendary Leeds gig, with a feast of material from The Rainbow in March 1975. The final disc represents further live material from 1977,1982 and 1986 and selections from BBC TV before whizzing through the decades all the way to the BBC Radio 2 folk awards and a triumphant `Over The Hill' with John Paul Jones.

It's a wonderfully selected set by a Martyn expert, produced to exceptionally high standards. This makes the decision not to bother annotating the selections all the more puzzling. Nowhere in the set is there any indication at all which albums each track is taken from, or release date. Why ? If it's aimed at those seeking to explore JM's career in more detail this ain't much help to them.

At a glance live recording dates and personnel would have been useful too, instead you have to read through the lengthy essay to glean this information. This is a major and inexcusable oversight in a box set of the standard we have become accustomed to from Island.

A definitive set nonetheless, docked a star for disregarding the detail.

Ain't no Saint - Brilliant
This 4 Disc CD set is really good with many many previously unreleased tracks and many different versions of classic tracks.

Each disc offers something slightly different but all are worth playing over and over

For me ideal music for when I'm driving, from this CD I was inspired to buy the DVD John Martyn at the BBC showing some really classic recordings of his ealry struff some dating back to 1973

One for the Road
I'd decided I wasn't going to write a review of this box set as there seemed to be plenty, but I'm sat here listening to the last track on CD.4 - Over the Hill and it's simply wonderful, as is the remainder of the set, I changed my mind.

I'd been aware of John Martyn for years, but never really listened much to him, I was at a friends one night about six years ago and he put a compilation on, then I saw the BBC documentary and realised what I'd been missing all this time. I bought Solid Air and One World and was blown away, having just seen the BEEB documentary again I logged on and read the reviews of this boxed set and purchased it there and then. I can only agree with most of the other reviews, If you are in the least bit interested, you wont be disapointed.

This is music of the highest order.

I never got to see John live, and now I never will and I regret it.

Ain't no saint
This is a superb collection compiled by John Hillarby, a man whose love for John Martyn's music shines through in his choices on all four discs. I feel blessed to have grown up in a time when John Martyn and his music were always there, whether on vinyl and cd, but especially when he was on stage. I love the design of the box set, with it's 50's trash novel feel of the inside booklet. After hearing all these songs, you will understand why John always said "I'm a funky not a folky". Now that's a t-shirt I would be proud to wear.

A Fantastic Document
Issued before the sad death of John Martyn this set has now become a wonderfull summary of his lifes work. A song from every studio album or CD released is supported by a number of unreleased gems, particulary from the Solid Air sessions. The second half of the set is a great collection of all unreleased live recordings with a moving Paul Kossof contribution from the Live At Leeds period. All in all a fantastic document, essential even if you have all of John [and Beverly] Martyn's releases.
