Excellent peace of mind
Great piece of kit, Running with an iMac, connected using the firewire 800, initially I set it up with a few spare old odd sata drives, took a little while to do the time machine back up but then just sat in the background seamlessly giving me peace of mind that not only the whole of my system was safe but also that the data I put directly onto the drobo was safe too. more recently updated the HDDs to 4 x 1TB swapping one old drive at at time out, no settings to set,, just works. Highly recommended
Perfect Piece of Equipment
Don't know why people are making a negative fuss about this - it is a perfect peice of equipment and runs excellently with my Macbook Pro.
DROBO Wonder
So I had heard many things about this product and had sat on the fence for a while. However, I have now demoted my bank of external drives and the DROBO sits happily on my desk neatly next to my IMAC. So noise, I had heard about this and how intrusive it was. I would have had issues with this, but there are none. Sure it whizzes a bit, but this is no problem at all. I listen to podcasts all day and if it bothered me in the slightest I would have been hacked off immediately. I bought two 1TB drives also from Amazon, and they were inserted with so much ease it was laughable. No RAID complexities here. The assurance the DROBO provides is worth every penny of the cost of the equipment. Amazon were speedy as usual.
All in all, if like me you were sitting on a painful fence, take the decision and buy, it is the best investment I have made, apart from my MACs!!!
Up and running within minutes
I cannot praise this item enough. After a bad experience with a cheaper array, I was a bit worried about wasting my money on another one but this worked first time and I had my four 500GB disks installed and working within five minutes. The DROBO is only connected by USB2 but the access time is fine for me and my data is secure at last.
Its good ... but 
Ok.. sooo I do the research and after some time I take the plunge and buy a Drobo. I have to say there has been a lot of thought put into the design on the packaging. Very well thought out and it looks amazing. It a real shame that more thought didnt go into the actual workings on the product.
The ease of use is fantastic simply insert your disks of any size into the bays and away you go. It does the rest for you. The problem is when you actually start pushing it. It doesn't perform well under load and seems to power cycle at every given opportunity. If one of your drive does fail it can take a long time to get back to a secure state (10 hours for about 600gb of data).
My drobo is connected to the Drobo Share at the moment however, the rebooting problem did seem to go away when it was directly connected to my computer.
The apps are a cool feature but remember that they are not supported by Data robotics and you might have to tweek them to get them working.
In summary - Its a good NAS box but for the price tag I would have expected more reliable performance.
