Effective database software ![]()
I've never really used databasing software before, and never really thought I needed it or would find it useful. But having now used Filemaker Pro 10, I really have found it worthwhile. The program installed without any problems on Vista, and also works on Macs, which is convenient for all users. This is not a cheap package by any means, and so if you're really only looking to catalogue your personal DVD or music collections then I'd suggest you look at cheaper programs. Filemaker Pro feels like just that, a pro package perhaps best suited to small business or corporate use. The Report tools certainly would benefit those sorts of users.
The user interface is decent, going with the recent trend of simplicity, whereby common functions are centralised. There is an option to switch to what I presume is the previous menu system, which is great for previous users who don't necessarily want to jump straight into the new design. This didn't benefit me, as I never used this line of software before, and I found the new interface to be very easy to navigate.
One feature which is definitely a plus is that it can handle PDF files. It's hard to believe that PDF conversion and modification is still absent from so many software packages, but this program has that capability so no problems there. You can also automate often-used functions so that you don't have to manually repeat every time, which is perhaps the most helpful feature as it takes so much work out of the process.
So, not essential software for an average user, and honestly you might find everything you need cheaper elsewhere, but it's very good at what it does.
Great database solution for business ![]()
I have been looking for a database solution for my home business for a while. Until now, I've been making do with Access but Access is clunky and I often gets conflicts with Outlook Business Contact Manager.
Filemaker has fit the bill perfectly and given me what I needed. I can store my contacts in one place, send emails, generate inventories and project management schemes. It even lets me generate PDF reports and manage various budgets efficiently.
I wouldn't be without this.
King of it's category ![]()
FileMaker 10 is *serious* database software. If your needs are for no more than cataloguing, say, your music collection, you would be throwing a little too much money for the privilege.
The various input types and what you can do with the data will definitely satisfy a high end user or organisation.
It's welcome to see that one package works for both Mac and Windows and indeed this makes sharing between both platforms easy as there are no incompatiblities in this shared version number.
Installation thankfully was painless and it has a familiar, easy feel which lets you get stuck in immediately allowing you to learn advanced features organically.
While FileMaker 10 undoubtedly corners the market it would be better if the price was a little more competitive so as to attract more users of other cheaper databases to entice them to features they're missing.
Impressive ![]()
If you operate a business that includes members of that small but growing minority of Mac users, the main option for creating and managing databases for your business has always been Filemaker Pro. Of course, if only a small number of your staff use Macs, then you still need something with cross-platform compatibility. Version 10's compatibility is arguably the main reason for Filemaker's success and now it's enhanced, as you can now create a database from the newer Excel workbooks too.
This new edition comes with an improved and more easily understood interface, and although there are new features too, it's the interface that is the most strikingly different. Items are better organised, there's room for longer names in menus where before only eight characters were displayed and the toolbar is customisable. Common commands are now front-and-centre, making them easier to find. That being said, the traditional ways of using the program are still available as an option.
Of course, how you use it is up to you depending on your database needs, and it's an impressively versatile program. For example, if you need to know who hasn't paid their bills, the 'Find Omitted Records' function instantly focuses on that particular of the database.
Dynamic Reports is another new addition which means that changes you make show up immediately, so you no longer need to switch the way you're viewing the data in order to see this. Additionally, there are Script Triggers which make it much easier than before to get the system to load a layout, revert to a previous record and more, with the smallest number of clicks. On top of all that, the processes are very quick and it is all far more user friendly. Clearly, Filemaker Pro 10 is not cheap, which means it has traditionally been a predominantly a business- rather than private-user package, however this new version makes it an extremely worthy proposition for any Mac user requiring a thoroughly sound database software package.
