new collectors box ![]()
At the time of being Creedence the band as a quartet released six official studioalbums and as a trio another one. After disbanding 2 more livealbums followed and much later on (a vinyl only release) "The Golliwogs". During the 30 years on countless compilations came rolling on, neither of them offering something new. Now within a decade 2 boxes appeared. The first one from 2001 offers more than you could have wished for. All the forementioned studio- and livelalbums, The Golliwogs album plus an amount of extra songs from the the they were called The Blue Velvets and the fun recording "45 revolutions per minute", which was never available on CD before. This 40th anniversary box differs a good deal, because this time The Golliwogs songs are ommitted, bar the excellent powerpopsong "Call it Pretending", which was the B-side of one of the first CCR singles. Also left out are the both official live-albums, as a fouthpiece and a threepiece. Instead numerous livesongs are included, a long "Suzy Q" performance (but the extra part, about 3 minutes, is not very much interesting), a new tape of "Crazy Otto", an instrumental bluesjam of 11 minutes, another 2 instrumentals, plus livetakes of several songs as a trio on the European tour. Also a young recording at the time of the first album from the "Cosmo's Factory"-album cover "Before you accuse me", a doubletake of "Bootleg" from te "Bayou Country" album and a studiojam with Booker T and the MG's. Also included is again the obscure single "45 Revolution per Minute". Both boxes are completed with a booklet but it is written by the same authors. Some mistakes are maken, the first album was according to the first box produced by CCR manager Saul Saentz but according to this box Fogerty him self produced it and I think that is the truth. He wanted to do everything by him self and you can hear that on several songs already. The song "Gloomy" is a John Fogerty composition, not written with his brother Tom together, which is "Walking On (the) Water", which was released before on the Golliwogs album. But these are minor issues. The real CCR fan will want to own both boxes, others might made a choice between them or own the first already so there is no need to buy the new release also. The last CD of this collection "Mardy Gras" is a Japanese pressing but I can hear almost no differences with other releases. Anyway, for the true fanatic this is a must be, and for those who know Creedence only by their bunch of singlehits it is a nice way to getting them to know much better by listening to their albums. Recommended!
