Who Moved My Cheese?: An Amazing Way to Deal with Change in Your Work and in Your Life

Amazon.co.uk Review
Change can be a blessing or a curse, depending on your perspective. The message of Who Moved My Cheese? is that all can come to see it as a blessing, if they understand the nature of cheese and the role it plays in their lives. Who Moved My Cheese? is a parable that takes place in a maze. Four beings live in that maze: Sniff and Scurry are mice, non-analytical and non-judgmental; they just want cheese and are willing to do whatever it takes to get it. Hem and Haw are "little people", mouse-size humans who have an entirely different relationship with cheese. It's not just sustenance to them; it's their self-image. Their lives and belief systems are built around the cheese they've found. Most of us reading the story will see the cheese as something related to our livelihoods--our jobs, our career paths, the industries we work in--although it can stand for anything, from health to relationships. The point of the story is that we have to be alert to changes in the cheese and be prepared to go running off in search of new sources of cheese when the cheese we have runs out.
Dr. Johnson, co-author of The One Minute Manager and many other books, presents this parable to business, church groups, schools, military organisations--anywhere where you find people who may fear or resist change. And although more analytical and sceptical readers may find the tale a little too simplistic, its beauty is that it sums up all natural history in just 94 pages: things change. They always have changed and always will change. And while there's no single way to deal with change, the consequence of pretending change won't happen is always the same: the cheese runs out. --Lou Schuler, Amazon.com
Customer Reviews:who moved my cheese
I had not heard of this book until my husband said it was a tiny book (only 80 pages), you could read it in your lunch break and it could change your life. I had to read it!
It is a compelling read and you certainly do not put it down until the last page has been turned.
The book's title is a metaphor for the inevitable changes in your lifetime and reaching difficult decisions. It has been reviewed extensively by small businesses and captains of industries.
I will not explain the contents of the book as it would ruin the story for you, suffice to say give it a read and you might find your cheese!
An inspirational little tale.
Who Moved My Cheese is a wonderfully simple story which discusses four different approaches to change - as represented by the metaphorical cheese of the title. I find some of the negative reviews here may be missing the point somewhat, as the story is deliberately reduced and boiled down to the basics to make the point impossible to ignore. Change can be a terribly worrying prospect and, if not prepared for, can spin even the strongest people into a tailspin with worries, insecurities and 'what-ifs'. I deal with similar issues in my book, Get Real! Relationship Success is an Inside Job .
I think the book's strength is this adherence to a very slight way of conveying its point. It makes its lesson easily accessible and also means that all age-groups can take on board what Johnson is saying. I would certainly recommend it to anyone who feels stuck in a cycle of negativity and who is resistant to change. Not essential, but very enjoyable and with a solid point to make.
Good transaction
The book was sent very quickly and was in good condition although some sentences were highlighted which was not mentioned in the advert. It did not bother me but it could have been unsuitable for another customer.
Great service
This book contains great advice if you follow it. A little bit Americanised and almost (forgive me) cheesy in places but well worth a read.
A Classic - Probably the World's Worst Book
This is about a mouse who goes to where his cheese usually is but it's gone. I doubt most mice would expect otherwise, but anyway, for some reason he keeps going back and the moral of the story is you have to look elsewhere for cheese.
Err... that's it.
You get the feeling the subtext is: You've lost your job - you've got to start afresh somewhere else, maybe doing something different. Of course if you were a mouse you would tend to look nearby for something similar to cheese, and practically the next job is more likely to be close to where you are and what you have been doing, but - Hey! - we're getting into far more detail than the book.
Please - you don't need to buy it now. I've told you EVERYTHING that's in it.
