Storm - Yes - In a Tea Cup!
I found this book tedious and written more like a novel waiting for the dramatic ending that never came. vince Cable is well aware, as is anyone who has studied Austrian Economics (the Kryptonite to Keynsianism with the causes of every bubble and bust clearly predicted by the likes of Ron Paul, Peter Schiff, von Mises, Rothbard and Stennholtz). Yes Cable does go into detail about what caused the financial meltdown, with every mention of Inflation - the 'printing and generating of money out of thin air' by Bank of England disguised as Quantitive Easing or brushed over. This told me all I had to know about his motives. How can he come to the conclusion that bailing out the Banks was the correct thing to do if in doing so the country does not generate enough income to repay the debt? The Banks now have OUR money and will charge us interest if we want to borrow our money back. And remember the Govt used our future tax receipts to buy worthless phoney Derivatives that the Banks generated out of thin air on a computer keyboard, the money did not exist to make them real, it was all 'Commercial Bank Money'. So if the Banks can show no loss in reality how can we bail them out? Who struck that kind of deal with Banks? Cable does not mention that Banks control the Government and should have been allowed to fail so we could purge our economy of Malinvestment and put these inefficient Financial firms out of business. That's the system everyone else has to live by. Yes it would have been painful but it would only have taken about a year and we would be on the way to a sound and genuine recovery by now. Currently we are going to have this 'no where land' bump along the bottom economy prolonged for another 5 years. Cable doesn't mention that alternative. Cable barely mentions neo Cons/New World Order in their true light. Which means he is terrified of offending them or he is one of them and if you think they should be running the world just have a look at the mess they created and somehow THEY are the ones along with the irresponsible Banks and Politicians who are going to sort it all out. You have to be kidding Cable. You have your eyes on the same prize as them.

The Storm Vince Cable
I learned so much by reading Vince Cable's The Storm; and I'm not a financial know-how, by any stretch-of-the-imagination.
He doesn't confuse with jargon, but where he has to use any 'in-language' he explains and clarifies.
The book is interesting and informative. I would like to legislate that everyone in the banking business; investors;and governments alike should read Vince Cable's The Storm, (possibly along with a good book on how to avoid greed!), as this would avoid anything like a repeat of the present times.

Too confusing for the general reader
Vince Cable (nearly typed Clark there) was one of the few politicians to have his reputation enhanced by the credit crunch and he seems to be a decent, knowledge-able man. Probably the best chancellor we'll never have in fact.

However this book seems to have been rushed, the meat of the book is in the middle chapters and they are very confusing. The rest of the book is pretty conventional stuff, so I didn't feel I learned very much and he doesn't really have much in the way of new solutions to the problem.

Broadly he just confirms what we already know - the credit crunch was caused by banks taking large bets with money they didn't have. Once the bets stopped paying off, the money wasn't there to pay off the creditors. You can wrap it all up in CDOs etc. but it's fairly simple at heart.

So not the classic I hoped for, there are better economics writers out there for the general reader. Tim Harford and Michael Lewis spring to mind, although no-one seems to have produced the definitive guide to the credit crunch yet (except possibly Keynes a long time ago).

Very clear and concise
I have only just started the book but already it has proven to hold my attention .... a good read, recommend to any armchair economist.

Global Economics makes more sense now
I am not an economist by education or training, so I read this book in order to learn more. I would certainly recommend it to others who want to know about the world economic system, how it works, and why it matters. Many people appear to believe that events at global level really don't affect them - but they do. This book should be on the curriculum at schools and universities. It is written by a man who knows about business and economics, not just about politics.
