Excellent piece of kit
Our Panasonic VHS recorder gave up the ghost and being unable to find a replacement turned to the possibility of DVD Recorder. I have had Panasonic televisions and other equipment for a number of years and have always considered them to be value-for-money and very reliable - friends advised me that regardless of make, I should pay a little more and get a model that had a Hard Disk Drive.
I opted for the Panasonic DMR-EX769EB-K Freeview + 160 Hard Disc Drive DVD Recorder and it arrived a couple of days after ordering. The accompanying handbook is a bit daunting but the machine more or less set itself up. I'm not particularly technical and old enough to have the odd "senior moment" so I was forced to produce for myself a three-page "idiots guide" from the detailed handbook on how to record to hard disc on one channel and watch another and how to play it all back on demand - it all works a treat! I'm now venturing into editing out adverts etc but I probably won't need to get around to setting the timer facility.
I've had the machine now for just over two weeks and I have to say that my views on Panasonic equipment are unchanged - it's good quality equipment, good value-for-money and would recommend this machine to anyone.
Why spoil a nice machine 
We use a Sony 870 and the new Panasonic. The are both easy to set up and the quality is excellent. Both machines are very similar in operation. But the fact that on the Panasonic nearly half of the guide screen is made up of nonsense advertising makes this machine a dog. Even at a premium potential buyers should look at the Sony 890 or the replacement which is due on dec 1 2009.

This is very easy to use for simple recording and viewing. I am still wrestling with the more complicated parts but it is still early days.
Excellent product 
I bought a Panasonic DMR-EX69EB-Freeview +160GB hard drive a month ago.Iam very pleased with it. I soon had it up and running.
I especially like the hard drive as it is so easy to use.The pause live tv is very useful. I can also start to watch a programme at the start while it is still recording which saves waiting to finish recording. Also if I have watched a programme and haven't time to see the finish, with just the press of a couple of buttons it will start to record and turn off at a set time. Then I can turn off the tv and watch it later. There are many more features but I will have to plough through the manual to work out. I am not too keen on the adverts on the freeview guide as it makes it a bit cluttered but this is a minor gripe. I would recommend the product to anyone as it is easy to use.By the way I am nearly 66 and it is a doddle to operate.
Probably best to look elsewhere 
BE WARNED! Does not allow you to record and view another channel at the same time if you are using it as a freeview box for an analogue tv. First one arrived and was very loud when playing DVDs and even produced a slight plastic burning smell. Amazon very good with return policy. Ordered replacement which is less noisy but I still think the interactive guide looks a bit cheap, the font used is a bit nasty. Hard drive works well and transfer from hard drive to DVD relatively straight forward. Quite slow when turning on. Instruction booklet over-technical at times. Not the product I expected from a company with the reputation that Panasonic has.
